Textiles
and Content
Over the
past fifteen years, I have integrated obsolete and broken items
from
my household (especially toys), hand-me-rounds from my family,
and discards
from my friends into my assemblage artworks.
Initially,
I enjoy these castoffs as the simple objects they have been.
Then, I
seek ways to stretch, twist, and refresh their previous context
and give them
a new expanded purpose. Using these mundane and familiar materials,
I
express
my joy and frustration with contemporary social realities.
I have recently
turned my attention towards words and stories, applying them
to
linens and other household fabrics. The clotheslines, napkins
and other objects
that have emerged from this investigation feel so calm and cozy
that the viewer
can enter the artwork relaxed and unguarded. This use of nostalgic
and
non-threatening textiles opens a door to discussion of uncomfortable
and often
hidden topics. I use familiar words and objects in a fresh aesthetic
to gently but
forcibly spark stalled dialogues.
